ABOUT SAVIGNAC RAYMOND

Raymond Savignac (1907-2002) is a poster artist best known for his clever, happy images. His people and his animals exude cheer. He began his artistic career making cartoons for advertising films. He was said to have considered movies, especially American comedies for his poster inspiration.

In 1935, Savignac met the famous poster artist, Cassandre, and worked as an assistant until Paris was occupied in WWII. While his style differs from Cassandre’s purist deco work, like Cassandre, Savignac’s posters generally involve a solo figure, human or animal.

Savignac claimed that his career began in 1949 when he created the famous image of the milk going directly from a cow into the bar of Monsavon soap. This was considered to be quite a visual scandal.
In his later years, Savignac used his posters to register his political feelings as can be seen in his posters, one of which urged people to protest an auto route on the left bank and another in which he refers to new housing developments as “residential garages”.
